Sulfites

What are they?

Food additives used to preserve color and freshness, although they also occur naturally in some foods.

What’s the problem?

They can cause hives, upset stomach, dizziness and a drop in blood pressure. Plus they can trigger asthma in some people with food allergies. Reactions range from mild shortness of breath to a life-threatening attack.

Where are they banned?

The FDA bans sulfites from meats high in vitamin B1, and prohibits their use on fresh fruits and vegetables that are typically eaten raw.

What to look out for?

Beware of sulfites in dried fruits, wine and fruit juices.
