What is it?

A food additive used to keep citrus flavoring from separating in sodas and sports drinks.

What’s the problem?

It contains bromine, a chemical used in flame retardants. Early studies show it may build up in the body, causing reproductive and behavioral issues.

There are also reports of:

  • Memory loss
  • Nerve disorders
  • Skin lesions
  • Slow thyroid

After drinking excessive amounts.

Where is it banned?

Banned in Europe and Japan as a food additive. The FDA currently allows its use in food under certain conditions. Pending more research.

What to look out for?

Check ingredient labels for BVO. Don’t drink huge amounts of BVO-containing beverages.
