Here’s how to make your own fruit sushi at home. It’s easy and simple while still playful and unique. Roll the sushi mat out and impress your friends and family with this modern take on the traditional Japanese food.
Here’s what you will need:
- Sushi rice
- Coconut milk
- Plastic wrap
- Bamboo-rolling mat
- Wooden spoon
- And of course… fruit!
First, let’s start with the rice. You’ll need to buy rice specifically made for sushi, known simply as sushi rice. If you don’t, it won’t stick and will just be a big mess. Once you’ve cooked the rice, add the coconut milk, sugar and vanilla. This will give it a sweeter taste, which goes perfectly with fruit.

Put the bamboo-rolling mat on the counter and place the plastic wrap on top. Spread the rice so it’s ½ inch thick into a rectangle.
Next, slice whatever fruit you’ve chosen into long, thin pieces and combine as desired. You can use pineapple, strawberries, peaches, blueberries, mangoes, kiwis, whatever you’re feeling. Now comes the fun part… roll your sushi like a burrito! Once you have it rolled and ready to go, use a potato peeler to slice mango or strawberries and place around the outside of the roll. Another option is toasted coconut flakes, depending on your mood. Slice into bite size pieces and voilà, fruit sushi for the whole family.
If you have leftover rice, you can make nigiri by rolling a ball of rice and then placing fruit on top. If you want to make it look similar to sushi, blackberries are a good topper because they look just like fish eggs.
