If constant clumps of hair on the pillow or in the drain have you feel like pulling your hair out in frustration… you’re not alone. Hair loss affects some 30 million American women. We all know our strands and can be a symbol of self-expression and even self esteem. So, the issue can be a hair-raising one, for sure.
So, when should you seek help? Dermatologist Wendy Roberts says, while we all shed…if you find more than 100 hairs per day in your brush on a regular basis…. there may be cause for concern.
Hair loss can be an indicator of another medical problem. Dr. Debra Jaliman, author of the book Skin Rules**, says common underlying issues include: thyroid problems, iron deficiency, anemia and lupus. Also, look for scalp infections such as ringworm.
When it comes to treatments, Dr Roberts says few are very effective. Medical treatments include products like Minoxidil, oral hair growth agents such as Biotin, Keratin, as well as laser treatments.
Dr. Jaliman cautions against so-called miracle cures, saying that many over-the-counter products that promise rapid and permanent hair growth don’t work…and are not FDA approved.
Both doctors we talked to agree that early diagnosis and early treatment are the best options available to women who are noticeably losing their locks.
